How to Track Hybrid Training: A Frictionless Guide to Logging Lifts, WODs, and Carries
What gets measured gets improved. I learned this firsthand when I spent six months meticulously tracking my workouts in a Google Sheet. I’ve been training and lifting for 15 years, but during those six months, I saw the most meaningful progress of my life. I always knew logging was important, but that period proved it beyond a doubt.
Yet, even with that knowledge, I found myself falling off the wagon. I abandoned my spreadsheet. Why? Because I was training as a hybrid athlete.
Trying to log reps, sets, weight, distance, and time across heavy lifts, cardio sessions, static holds, and loaded carries became a data mapping nightmare. It took too much time just to generate a simple graph of my progress. It wasn't a lack of motivation that derailed my tracking; it was friction. Life gets in the way, and when logging becomes a chore, we stop doing it.
This exact frustration is why Gym Analyst exists. Here is how I use it to track my hybrid training, completely friction-free.
1. Zero-Friction Capture with Voice AI
Consistent logging requires an app that works with you, not against you. You can have the most sophisticated analytics dashboard in the world, but if you don’t have data, you have nothing. Gym Analyst was built to make logging effortless, giving you multiple ways to capture your output based on what is most convenient for you in the moment.
I predominantly use the Voice AI feature. I simply speak my session into the app and hit save.
Because I keep my workouts relatively straightforward, I don't have trouble remembering what I just did. What I love most about this feature is that it doesn’t require me to speak like a robot.
For example, if I dictate: "I did 4 by 5 squats with 90kg… no, wait, it was 3 sets of 5 with 80kg, and 1 set of 5 with 90kg."
The AI knows exactly what I mean and structures the data perfectly. It’s a game-changer for consistency. I literally walk out of the gym, speak into my phone, and I am done within seconds.

2. Digitizing the Analog: Notebooks and Whiteboards
For the times I can't or don't want to use voice, I use the Vision AI Scanner.
I prefer using a physical notebook over logging directly on my phone. The gym is my sacred space to disconnect and focus on my body. If I pick up my phone to log a set, I inevitably see a work email or a notification. The distraction ruins the session. So, for longer or more complex sessions, I write everything in my notebook. At the end of the workout, I snap a photo of the page. Gym Analyst reads my handwriting and logs the entire session instantly.
This is also invaluable when I visit my hometown and drop into the local functional fitness gym. They write the daily workouts on a whiteboard. After the session, I just take a photo of the whiteboard, check the generated log to ensure it's accurate, and hit save. I used to do CrossFit years ago, and I would have loved a tool that could just "read" the whiteboard and log my work.
(Note: Manual logging is always there as a backup if you forget your notebook, but the goal is to keep you off the screen.)

3. Tracking the Complex: Sled Pushes, Carries, and Holds
If you incorporate loaded carries and holds into your training, standard fitness apps break down. Spreadsheets become a headache.
If I want to progress on sled pushes, I have three variables to measure: I can push it faster (time), I can push it further (distance), or I can push a heavier sled (weight). Gym Analyst handles this natively.
You can seamlessly toggle between these metrics for the same exercise. By navigating to the Data tab, selecting "Sled Push," I can immediately toggle between weight, time, or distance to view my progression over the months.
Personally, I love doing a 1-mile asymmetric kettlebell carry. I log the distance, the weight of the kettlebell, and the time it took. This unified workload logic is essential for Hyrox athletes who need to rigorously practice sled pushes and farmer carries, finally giving them a way to visualize their progress.

4. Smart Blocks for WODs and Benchmarks
I designed Smart Blocks specifically to solve the problem of tracking complex circuits or benchmark WODs.
Once a year, I tackle "Murph." I obviously want to track my total finish time, but I also want the specific volume of pull-ups I did during Murph to count toward my total pull-up volume for the year.
By wrapping my Murph session in a Smart Block, I can log the total time for the workout, while the individual components—pull-ups, air squats, push-ups—are tracked against their respective historical charts. Best of all, you can use Voice AI for this. If I say, "I did Murph in 55 minutes," the AI recognizes the benchmark and logs the entire structure automatically.
I also use this for quick home circuits. If I have 10 minutes, I might do an AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible) of 10 burpees and 20 kettlebell swings. I log the total rounds completed. Over time, I can look at the Data tab, select that specific circuit, and see that I'm now hitting 5 rounds in the 10-minute window, compared to the 4 rounds I managed when I started.
EMOMs work differently enough that I gave them their own write-up—the work per minute is fixed and the clock is the constraint, which changes what you need to record. If that's the format you run, here's how I track EMOM workouts.

The Case Against Rigid Templates
If you are someone who meticulously plans every detail of a workout and follows it rigidly, Gym Analyst might not be your primary tool.
For me, workouts almost never go exactly as planned. I adapt in the moment. When I used template-heavy apps, having to manually edit a pre-built template mid-workout was a massive point of friction that caused me to quit logging.
Today, I have a solid idea of what I want to accomplish when I walk into the gym, but my focus is purely on progression. I just need to capture the output securely and instantly. I don’t obsess over rigid plans; I obsess over showing up and doing the work.
Are you asking these same questions?
If you find yourself constantly asking the questions below, and the answers resonate with you, then Gym Analyst was built exactly for your use case.
What is the best app for logging a workout with your voice?
Gym Analyst allows you to speak your entire workout naturally—including mistakes and self-corrections—and uses AI to instantly structure the audio into a clean, trackable data log containing exercises, sets, reps, and weights.
Is there an app that can digitize handwritten workout logs?
Yes. Gym Analyst includes a Vision AI feature that allows you to take a photo of a notebook page or a gym whiteboard. It reads the handwriting and automatically logs the workout into your digital history.
How do I track CrossFit WODs and Hyrox stations easily?
Using "Smart Blocks" in Gym Analyst, you can wrap a complex circuit (like Murph or Hyrox stations) into one entity. This tracks your overall time or rounds for the WOD, while simultaneously tracking the individual progression of the movements inside (like pull-ups or sled pushes).
How do you track farmer carries and sled pushes?
Standard apps only track Sets x Reps x Weight. To track loaded carries properly, you need an app like Gym Analyst that supports "Loaded Duration"—allowing you to track the exact Load, Distance, and Time for exercises like sled pushes and farmer carries.
How can I track my workout without looking at my phone?
The most effective way is to write your workout in a physical notebook during your session, keeping your phone in your locker. After the workout, use Gym Analyst's photo scanner to digitize the notebook page in seconds.
